That is the question. As one can see, the administration officer in Magdeburg wasn’t quite sure how to answer it. The shown variant is from the marriage entry of Friedrich Wilhelm Ludewig Heinrich (apparently four names are enough) Howeg, a magistrate in Wernigerode by profession, and Katharina Forstreuter, daughter of an engineer. Friedrich belonged to the Oschersleben branch being born there in 1870 and later moving to the mentioned town of Wernigerode, eventually living in Zeitz until his death.
How could one tell he belonged to the Oschersleben branch without knowing he was born there? It’s the variant! Hobicht was the name they got from the villagers and/or the officials in Oschersleben almost throughout the whole 19th century. More about that on the page of the branch itself.
